Do you have the right layering system? Dressing for the outdoors isn't about piling on the warmest clothes you own. It's a system where each layer has a specific job. At Plein Air Entrepôt, we answer this question every day. Here's how it works, and our ultimate tip for a layering system that really performs.
Layer 1: the base layer
This is the layer worn right against your skin. Its main job: moving moisture away from your body. A base layer that keeps sweat against your skin will chill you as soon as you stop moving.
The right choice depends on how active you are:
- High-output activity: go with a synthetic layer, which wicks and dries very quickly.
- Moderate activity: merino wool is ideal, such as a Smartwool t-shirt or long-sleeve top. It's comfortable, stays warm even when damp and resists odours.
- Extreme cold: you can even choose a thicker synthetic layer, like the Mountain Hardwear AirMesh.
Layer 2: the insulating layer
The mid-layer is the one that keeps you warm. It traps the warm air your body produces while letting moisture from the base layer pass through.
Two options that work very well:
- A thick, breathable fleece: a reliable choice, warm and versatile.
- A light synthetic puffy jacket: lightweight, packable and it keeps its warmth even when slightly damp.
Layer 3: the shell
The outer layer protects you from the elements. You want a shell that blocks rain and wind.
One very important point: it must be roomy enough to wear over all your other layers. A common mistake is buying a shell that's too small. It then compresses your insulating layer, which loses its effectiveness, and restricts your movement.
Our advice: try your shell on in store while wearing all your other layers. When in doubt, size up.
The ultimate tip: everything has to breathe
Here's the secret to a successful layering system: every layer has to let moisture escape as much as possible.
If moisture gets trapped anywhere in your system, you'll get wet and you won't be comfortable. A single non-breathable layer is enough to block everything. On the other hand, when every layer breathes, all you have to do is open your waterproof shell and the moisture escapes. And you stay dry.
In summary
| Layer | Role | What to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer | Move moisture away | Synthetic (high output or extreme cold) or merino wool (moderate activity) |
| Insulating layer | Keep the heat in | Thick breathable fleece or synthetic puffy |
| Shell | Protect from rain and wind | Roomy enough to fit over everything; when in doubt, size up |
